I love bookstores
What reader doesn’t? Bookstores=places to buy books. They’re entire stores DEVOTED to selling those bound pages filled with ink, etched on in a specific order to create a beautiful story.
So where the heck is this going?
On Wednesday, July 7, I went to a bookstore for the first time since quarantine began. In honor of that (and yes, I know it was actually a while ago by now) I wanted to write a post talking about different bookstore people. Just like there’s different ways to eat an oreo (pull the sides apart and eat the chocolate cookie and then the inside and then the other cookie, obviously), there’s different ways to browse a store.
(Note: All of these terms and definitions have been created by me, and are not any sort of official term. Any similarities to other posts or other terms that people have used was entirely by mistake)
The Browser
The browser is someone who goes to a bookstore to look at books, but not necessarily buy them. Maybe they have enough money for one or two books, but really they’re just here for the experience. Bookstores are this place where you can just see books upon books in displays, all put out so neatly, and new and beautiful. Sure, you can see any of these books online, but seeing them all laid out together, and so nicely, is just something else. The Browser will spend hours, if they’re allowed, just looking at the books, sometimes running their hands over the spines, or pulling one out to hold it, looking at the same shelf over and over and then looking some more even though they already know what it looks like. They don’t need to buy anything–they can get all these books from the library. In fact, they almost don’t want to buy the books–after all, what if they don’t end up enjoying the one they buy? They’re just satisfied to look at them.
I am most certainly a Browser. It’s actually fairly rare that I go to bookstores, and when I do, it’s even more rare that I spend my own money. Most of the time, I’m either using a gift card or getting a book for my friend’s birthday. I’m actually an extremely cheap person, and spending my money isn’t something I enjoy, so I’m totally satisfied by just staring at the books. I LOVE going to bookstores just to look at the displays of books and to see how many books are OFFERED.
All Business
Someone who is All Business is simply in and out. They come to a bookstore looking for a specific book, they find it, they buy it, and they leave. Sure, they like books, but it’s not like they’re going to look at displays of them for a long time without buying them. They’d rather just return to their houses to curl up on the couch with the book they did want, and if they want to look at books they can find them online.
People who are All Business just don’t appreciate the amazingness of bookstores. They’d rather have the one book they specifically wanted than be surrounded by books and take them all in. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a specific book, but if you’re going to be at a bookstore anyways, just stop to look at some other books. If you’re only there to get one, just buy it online. (no offense if you’re All Business. Just…take a little look around, next time.)
The Spenders
This one is rather self explanatory, but The Spenders are the people who come to bookstores to buy books. Maybe they came to the bookstore to get one or two books, but there’s just so many shelves, and so many amazing stories…they can’t help but leave with five. At the least. Spenders are like Browsers in the way that they’d spend all day in a bookstore because they love seeing the books so much, but the difference is that Spenders aren’t afraid of using their money on these lovely volumes.
Spenders and Browsers are pretty closely connected, and I would definitely be a Spender if I weren’t so cheap. In fact, I’ve been known to pull lots of books off of the shelves at stores, just so I know how many books I would get. But I never do.
The Dwellers
Dwellers treat bookstores like their own living rooms. They’ll spend hours in bookstores, too, but they don’t come to buy books…they come to read books. They’ll pull a book off the shelf, find a nice seat in the store, and start reading. Maybe they’ll get through a few chapters, maybe they’ll get through the whole book. Maybe they’ll buy the book, maybe they’ll stick it back on the shelf. The bookstore shelves are practically their own shelves, the amount they read from them.
I would totally be a Dweller if I could, because just curling up in a bookstore with a good book sounds amazing. Especially because, yeah, I probably won’t buy it once I read it. But I also have these weird irrational fears that a) an employee will kick me out/make me buy the book because I’m just sitting here reading it without paying or b) I’ll accidentally damage the book and then I’ll have to buy it.
The Drag-Alongs.
Drag-Alongs don’t necessarily want to be at the bookstore (for whatever reason). Instead, they’re the siblings that you forced to come with you on your monthly book-searches, or the little kids whose mothers just need to pick up the book their book club is reading. They spend the entire time complaining or causing chaos. The only way to distract them is to set them up in the cafe attached to the bookstore with a muffin. If there’s no cafe, guess you’re out of luck.
Honestly, I think we’ve all been Drag-Alongs at some point in our life. If not at a bookstore, at some other store that your parents are forcing you to come to. And while Drag-Alongs are no fun for the person they’re with or the other customers at the store, we can at least have a little sympathy for them…right? They’re just little kids… (unless they’re the older sibling that your parents made you bring when you said you wanted to go to the bookstore…)
Just Killing Time
The fact that people who are Just Killing Time ended up in a bookstore isn’t necessarily on purpose. They didn’t actually choose to go to this store, but they just wanted to go somewhere when they had a little free time, looked around, and there was the bookstore. They don’t know if they want to buy books, or look at books–they don’t even know if they like books. They’re just here to hang around. People who are Just Killing Time are usually teenagers.
These people are not always great to run into…they’re often loud and in the way because they’re just looking to cause mischief.
What did you think of this post? It was a little random, I know, but I thought it would be a bit of a fun thing to write about! What type of bookstore-goer are you? Can you think of any other type of person in the bookstore?
Thank you so much for reading this post! I really hope that you enjoyed it! As always, stay safe and keep reading!
Great post!! I’m definitely a mix of the browser and the spender for sure!!

Thank you! Yeah, I was trying to think of something somewhere in between those two…I felt like I was missing something…but I couldn’t really think of something! So I sort of just said that those two are pretty closely connected and there’s probably a lot of people in the middle. I’m so glad that you enjoyed this!

Thank you so much, haha! I was just going off my head, writing what I was thinking…honestly, I’d been toying with writing a post about bookstores since I went to that one, but I didn’t come up with this specific idea until this morning, when I wrote the entire post, so it was really just a stream of conscious. I’m glad you thought they were good, though!

Amazing post!! ❤ ❤ I'm definitely a browser! (And I used to sit in corners and start reading stuff when given the time and sometimes there would be nice employees who wouldn't say anything about it) As for other types of bookstore-goers, I've seen people just in for buying gifts, and some only for the keychains/goodies….and while I get them, I always go COME ON THERE ARE SO MANY BOOKS HERE

Thank you so much! Yes, glad to see there’s another browser out there! So many people always talk about buying books at bookstores, and how many books they’ve bought, and my stance is kind of that books are actually fairly expensive (though I obviously understand why, authors put a lot of work into those!) and so I don’t like to buy books, usually, but I just love being WITH the books!
Ooh, yeah, I was thinking of adding something like that for another kind of bookstore goers, but didn’t really know how to phrase it. But yeah, I totally agree. This is a BOOKSTORE, why would you go into it to buy something ELSE and then just LEAVE???

This is so clever and so accurate! I feel like I’ve been all these people at some point. I try and be all business but end up being a spender.

Thank you so much, I’m so glad that you enjoyed! Ha, yeah, when you go to a bookstore LOOKING for one thing but then you buy a bunch more…I honestly think that’s a good combination, because it gives you a chance to look around and see new books, while also getting something you came for.

I haven’t stepped inside a bookstore in ages, and I don’t know what category I fit into (it depends on how much free time I have on my hands at the time lol) great post!!

Ah, yeah, it’s really rare for me to get into a bookstore, too…I hope that you’re able to step into one soon! Haha yeah I suppose amount of free time is a big factor in which type of bookstore person you are as well. Thank you so much, I’m so glad that you enjoyed!

Wow this was so creative!
I think I would be somewhere between a dweller and a spender (btw I can’t get more than a few pages in because I totally have those “irrational fears” you mentioned, and that would be so embarrassing, right?)
Loved reading this!

Ah I’m so glad that I’m not the only one with those fears! They seemed a little…far-fetched but I’m just always worried, no matter where I am, that I’m going to be doing the wrong thing and be yelled at or something so I can’t really sit down and read an unbought book at a bookstore either.
I’m so glad that you enjoyed!

Haha. I guess I am like you the Browser but I don’t get to go very often in bookstores😅 because they are so far from my place. The most books I came out of a bookstore is seven because my mother gave me the harry potter books as a gift when I passed my exams in primary school😂

Hey, it’s always good to meet another browser! Yeah, I don’t get to go to a bookstore very often either…they aren’t that far from where I live, but you do have to take a car/bus/some sort of transportation to get there so it’s just not somewhere I go to much. Hey, seven is really good, even if it is the same series! Honestly, the most I may have ever come out of a bookstore with might be four…I just don’t buy books often (and all of those four were bought using a gift card)

Loved this post! I love bookstores but have to get my mom or my sister with me so I don’t end up spending half a day in there losing all sense of time lol. I guess I have a mentality of coming in All Business but end up being both the Browser and Spender 😂❤️

Ah, yeah, bringing family to bookstores…I have to do that as well. Fortunately for me, both my mom and my sister enjoy reading as well, so we all sort of wander off to our own sections of the store. All Business seems like what a lot of people WANT to be when they enter bookstores, but then they get lost. I personally think that’s a good mix, because you get a book you want but you ALSO get to look around and see what other books you might want.
Thank you so much for stopping by, and I’m so glad that you enjoyed!

Wow, I enjoyed reading this post!! I think I’m the browser because I don’t get to buy more than one book per month and also because I LOVE browsing books😄

I’m so happy that you liked it! Yeah, there’s just something about looking through the shelves, not having to buy them but just SEEING all the books out like that, and being able to see all their beautiful covers and how they’re on display…even if you don’t buy them it’s still a wonderful experience. Glad you feel the same way!

hahaha i loved reading this post!! i think i’m a mix between a spender (rip to my parent’s credit cards lmao) and a dweller hahahaha, my shelves don’t have any more space, and i have too much of an emotional attachment to give any of my old books away, so all the new books are just collecting in a pile in my room 😅 love this post though!! 💕

I’m so glad that you enjoyed it! Haha I would totally be a spender if my parents let me use their credit cards to pay for books but nope, it’s my own money going into buying those books, so I basically never buy them. Haha my shelves are TOTALLY the same, I have literally no room left and we’ve just put some of the books that we’re probably not gonna read anymore into boxes. Thank you so much for stopping by!

I loved this! I’m probably a mixture between a browser and a dweller, but like you, I’m very scared of employees coming to kick me out if I just stay in their store and read all day without ever buying anything 😅 So when I read in a bookstore, it’s usually in one of those bigger ones where you can easily get lost without anyone noticing you! 😁

Thank you so much! Ha, yeah, exactly! Bigger stores are so much easier to hide in and just read without anyone noticing…I usually read at least a few chapters of a book or two in those sorts of stores. Thank you so much for stopping by and I’m so glad you enjoyed!

haha this was a fun post!! i’m definitely the browser as well (i can literally spend HOURS just staring yearningly at all the shelves and wanting to buy alllll the books) LOL. and i used to be the dweller (pre-covid) and actually read quite a lot of books in the bookstore whoops haha

Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed! Yeahhhh, exactly, like I don’t actually have to BUY books when I go to a bookstore (though I definitely want to), I just want to be able to LOOK at them. And even when I’m actually picking out books, I take way longer than anyone else because I’m just looking at them all. Haha well you must have some courage because I’d never be able to do that without being terrified of being caught…but good for you, for finding ways to read books at bookstores, I guess?
thanks for stopping by!

What a fun idea for a post! I’m definitely a Browser too and I’m glad it’s not just me. I can’t relate to huge book haul posts because often I’ll have a wonderful time in a bookshop without buying anything! I tend to get my books from the library or secondhand 📚❤️ X x x

Thank you, I’m so glad that you enjoyed! Oh yes exactly, there are people out there who post giant book haul posts and my reaction is usually something along the lines of a) where did they get all that money or b) how are they comfortable with spending all that money haha. Yah I also often get my books from the library, it’s a great resource!

I’m definitely a browser/spender but also, I do go to bookstores a lot to kill time when I’m waiting to meet someone. I usually end up sending messages to people like ‘was early, headed to book shop, come find me there’ 😀
LikeLiked by 1 person
Haha that is amazing and I wish I could do that. There’s not a huge amount of bookstores near where I live so I can’t really just pop into one when I’m waiting for people but that is absolutely amazing that you just do that.

Yeah, I’m lucky that there are two book shops in the shopping centre near me and then two more book shops (not including any charity shops that sell second hand books) in the city centre just a 10 minute drive from where I live. Could always do with more/different bookshops to browse though 😀

Oh yeah that is really lucky. The closest store to me, I have to take a bus to get to, and their YA section is super small, it’s mostly adult books I guess. Well, still, having two bookstores close by is nice and if you ever want more books you can make a longer trip once in a while!

Yeah, the two bookshops nearest to me don’t have great fantasy sections but one has the advantage of nice stationery and the other has a small section of America sweets so I can buy the good flavour of pop tarts I can’t get in normal Irish stores 😀

Ah yeah, that’s always unfortunate but hey yeah stationary is nice. Ooooh, bookstores with cafes and/or places to buy food are always the best kind–you can get food AND books.

ha love it!! i am most certainly a browser, but wish i could be a spender. if only i had enough money to buy ALL THE BOOKS!!!!! and also, what is this business about multiple ways to eat an Oreo????? you shove the whole thing into your mouth and i cannot be convinced there is another way that tastes better.

Rightttt If i was like a millionaire I would be a huge spender and just have an entire five rooms in my mansion (because if I’m a millionaire I’m gonna have a mansion) for BOOKS.
And no, that’s a terrible way to eat an Oreo, you have to eat it all separately to be able to taste each individual part!!!

Thank you! Just a suggestion, most people don’t like when people ask them to follow their blogs because it sounds like you’re just here to get more followers on your own blog! Most bloggers will check out the blogs of people who comment on their blogs, so if you don’t ask them to follow, people will actually be more likely to follow.
